Calvert Marine Museum Camps 2023

Click HERE for the Camper Health Form 2023. This is a prerequisite for all camps and needs to be received by May 15, 2023. If not received by this time, you may forfeit your space.

Dig, Plant, Grow! Camp                                                                     For students entering grades 1 and 2
Dates: Monday, June 19-June 22, 2023
Times: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Cost: $100 members, $110 nonmembers

Dig in and explore the gardens of the Calvert Marine Museum. Learn about the parts of a plant when we plant seeds and design our own gardens. Grow your knowledge of pollination while participating in a pollinator race. Observe “breathing” leaves, soil composition, and insect friends that visit our gardens. Record your findings in your nature notebook complete with your own botanical illustrations. Throughout camp, collaborate with fellow future scientists in community projects like painting a rain barrel and assisting a master gardener in the CMM children’s garden.  Participants in this camp MUST be at least 6 years old at the start of camp.

Junior Paleontologist  Camp-FULLFor students entering grades 5 and 6

Dates: Monday, June 26 - Thursday, June 29, 2023
Times: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 
Cost: $120 members, $130 nonmembers

Become a junior paleontologist and hunt on local beaches for fossil shark teeth, whale bones, and the shells of ancient snails and clams. Work with our professional paleontologists to uncover the mysteries of these ancient animals and the environments in which they lived. Learn collecting techniques and how to properly preserve your specimens. Keep a field journal, complete with your own drawings and observations. Get a special behind-the-scenes look at the amazing fossil collection at the Calvert Marine Museum and then excavate a section of fossil matrix using the tools and skills of a paleontologist!

Protectors of the Patuxent-FULLFor students entering grades 3 and 4
Dates: Monday, July 10  - Thursday, July 13, 2023

Go with the flow of the Patuxent River working with museum educators to explore the water quality along the river banks, take a trip on the historic William B. Tennison to where the river and bay meet while recording species that you find as you create your own Patuxent River field guide.  Meet the Patuxent Riverkeeper and explore what people are doing around the bay to protect this valuable resource.

Reptiles and Amphibians-FULLFor students entering grades 1 and 2
Dates: Monday, July 24  - Thursday, July 27, 2023
Times: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Celebrate all things scaly and slimy at the Calvert Marine Museum by exploring the amazing process of metamorphosis and shedding. Turn over logs and flip rocks at Flag Ponds Nature Park and discover the vast life that lives beneath.  Campers will get hands on experience with native reptiles like our corn snake and terrapin! We will investigate the various habitats offered at the museum for these crawling creatures and campers will create their own “museum exhibit” for a special reptile or amphibian. Participants in this camp MUST be at least 6 years old at the start of camp.

Marsh Detectives-FULLFor students entering grades 1 and 2
Dates: Monday, August 7  - Thursday, August 10, 2023

Bring your curiosity and magnifying glasses to be marsh detectives at the Calvert Marine Museum. Discover the role of the unique marsh habitat and its residents, including the playful North American river otter. We will explore the museum, investigate the marsh, design a t-shirt, make otter treats, and find our way through the otter obstacle course. The journey continues with two field trips including a one-hour cruise aboard the historic W.B. Tennison.  Your marsh adventure awaits! Participants in this camp MUST be at least 6 years old at the start of camp.
