ROOTS OF A NATION - A CHESAPEAKE JOURNEY

A three-year Teaching American History grant in the amount of $950,000 was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to Kent County Public Schools to provide teachers in Calvert, St. Mary’s, and five Eastern Shore counties professional development in American history. “Roots of a Nation – A Chesapeake Journey” was developed by Sultana Projects in partnership with the Calvert Marine Museum, the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, and the Center for the Environment and Society at Washington College. This dynamic program is designed to give 35 master teachers from the seven participating counties an in-depth, field-based experience in four areas of history: Native American History and European Settlement, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and Slavery and the Civil War.
The Calvert Marine Museum’s focus will be the War of 1812, which will link to the approaching bicentennial. Working with Dr. Ralph Eshelman, author of The War of 1812 in the Chesapeake, and Donald Shomette who wrote Flotilla: The Patuxent Naval Campaign in the War of 1812, the museum will offer four courses each year over the next three years, as well as hosting a large conference in November 2011. Deputy Director Sherrod Sturrock said, “We are thrilled to be part of this program. It will allow us to work with scholars and educators, as well as showcasing local cultural institutions like Sotterley Plantation and Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. This is a tremendous opportunity for teachers to get a better grounding in American history as it relates to this region.”
