The museum presents Sandra MacLean Clunies speaking on Keepers Finders: Early Lighthouse Families of the Chesapeake Bay. Ms. Clunies is a certified genealogist and lighthouse historian who specializes in lighthouse keepers and their families. Free lecture in the museum auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Everyone loves to watch river otters swim and play. Come meet our otters, find out just how special they are, feel the fur, and see how their feet help them to move in and out of the river. Free drop-in program for children 18 months to 3 years old.

The Lore Oyster House Experience. Recently renovated and reopened after a two-year hiatus, the Lore Oyster House will be brimming with activity. Museum interpreters will provide special programs, demonstrations, and activities that will help visitors get a taste of life in the oyster house from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society (SMOCS) will be on hand to talk about growing oysters. Free.

PEM Talks: The Calvert Cliffs Conundrum
Dr. Susan Kidwell will present Begin at the Beginning: The Geology and Paleoenvironmental History of Calvert Cliff at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Dr. Kidwell’s primary research focus is the new field of conservation paleobiology, which uses very young fossil records to evaluate the human footprint in coastal ecosystems. The Miocene strata of Calvert Cliffs, where she started her research career, nonetheless remains a favorite field area for geological research and teaching on the formation of marine sedimentary records. Free.

The Vikings Have Landed! The Longship Company and their 38’ boat, Sae Hrafn will be in the boat basin with demonstrations and displays about these infamous marauders of old. Costumed re-enactors will share cooking techniques, use of tools, and sailing lore throughout the day from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is required.

Sunday Conversations with Chesapeake Authors opens with The Monster Shark’s Tooth. In this children’s book, the young protagonist travels through time into the Miocene period to confront a real Megalodon shark. Talk with author Peter Vogt about the inspiration for his story, and illustrator Tim Scheirer about the process of bringing it to life through his art. Tim, who is also a member of the exhibits staff at the museum, will have original artwork created for the book on display. Free program at 2:00 p.m. in the Members’ Lounge. Book signing following the talk, books for sale in the Museum Store.
