VISIT THE NOAA BAY HYDROGRAPHER AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Sep 4, 2007, 21:43

Solomons, MD – The NOAA Survey Vessel, S/V BAY HYDROGRAPHER, will be docked at the Calvert Marine Museum from Monday, September 24 through Tuesday, October 2. The public is invited to come and tour the vessel, and see how it is used to map the bay floor.

The S/V BAY HYDROGRAPHER is visiting the museum and inviting the public to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) celebrate the 200th anniversary of its root agency, the Survey of the Coast. Seeing the importance of having accurate charts to support maritime commerce and provide national security for our new nation, Thomas Jefferson created the Survey of the Coast in 1807. The agency exists today as the Office of Coast Survey within NOAA’s National Ocean Service.

Join the crew of S/V BAY HYDROGRAPHER and take a fascinating look into the history of nautical charting, learn how a simple rope and lead were used to produce charts in the days of Thomas Jefferson, and see demonstrations of the state-of-the-art technologies in use today on this 56’10” vessel. Free with museum admission. For information call 410-326-2042 ext. 41, or visit the museum’s website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com.
