FREE FRIDAYS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM
Sep 6, 2007, 21:45
The Calvert Marine Museum is introducing a new initiative designed to bring local residents to the museum for a free, fun way to spend their Friday evenings. “First Free Fridays” which begins in October, offers free admission to the museum from 5 – 8:00 p.m. the first Friday evening of every month, October through April. The goal, according to Deputy Director Sherrod Sturrock, is to encourage new local audiences to come and visit, and to extend the museum’s hours into the evening. “We are exploring ways to be more responsive to the public,” said Sturrock. “Offering a free evening does that in two ways – it is a gift back to our community, and it extends the museum hours into the evening. We’ll see what the response is and evaluate whether to discontinue or expand this idea.”
Each month, “First Free Friday” will offer special public programming that corresponds to the theme for the month. On October 5, the activities will align with Patuxent River Appreciation Days, which takes place October 6 and 7. Visitors can talk with working watermen, join the grassroots movement People for the Patuxent, see “Preacher for the Patuxent,” a documentary about Bernie Fowler, at 7:00 p.m. and talk with former Senator Fowler afterward.
