The Calvert Marine Museum brings local history and maritime culture to life every month through specially designed youth programs for children ages 3-9. Little Minnows, for youngsters aged 3-5, meets from 10:00am – 11:00am on selected weekdays each month. Young Salts, for children aged 4-6, meets from 10:00am – noon on selected Saturdays monthly. Young Buccaneers, for youth aged 7-9, meets from 10:00am – noon on selected Saturdays monthly.
Little Minnows, Young Salts, and Young Buccaneers programs are hands-on, interactive educational workshops where children work with the museum educators on games, craft projects, story telling, role-playing, tours of the museum, and much more. Programs are designed to present a close look at a specific museum theme or exhibit, and topics for each of these workshops changes monthly.
On Saturday, September 15, Young Salts presents “Living in the Lighthouse 100 Years Ago.” Participants will enjoy a special tour of Drum Point Lighthouse and learn how children lived in the lighthouse 100 years ago. What chores would they have? What did they do for entertainment? Find out during this fun and informative session.
On Saturday, October 13, Young Buccaneers presents “How to Make a Difference.” Did you know that just one person can make a big change for the earth? Participants will explore how to make a difference, what matters to each of us, and will build tools to help make a difference for the earth!
On Saturday, October 20, Young Salts presents “Did you know that plants help people breathe?” Participants will learn how plants help the earth in many ways, and do their part by planting a seed and watching it grow.
On Saturday, November 3, Young Buccaneers presents “Life on the High Seas.” Ahoy land lubbers! Participants will learn some of the chores of sailors, and all about life on the high seas while practicing the skills it takes to live shipboard! On Saturday, November 17, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Young Salts presents “The Pirate’s Life Is For Me!” These seafaring rogues had to survive lousy food, bad living conditions, and injuries from sea battles. Learn what the pirate life was like through role playing, trying hard tack, and making a spyscope.
Fees for these programs range from $8-$10, and programs are open to the public. Pre-registration is required for all sessions.
