MUSEUM TO HOST 2nd “STATE OF THE RIVER SUMMIT”
Sep 25, 2007, 08:19
On Friday, October 5, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. the Calvert Marine Museum will host the second State of the River Summit. In an effort to infuse urgency into the effort to clean up the Patuxent River, former Senator Bernie Fowler directed the Patuxent River Commission to draft an Action Plan for the Patuxent which will be presented at the Summit. The plan is based on the position that what is currently being done at all levels of government is not working; the time has come for meaningful change.
Following an update on the status of the river by Chesapeake Biological Laboratory scientist Dr. Walter Boynton, Fred Tutman, Patuxent Riverkeeper, will present the Action Plan. There will be three panel discussions representing the state of Maryland Chesapeake Bay cabinet, the seven counties of the Patuxent watershed, and state legislators. Each will have an opportunity to respond to the action plan. In conclusion, Senator Fowler will outline the next steps to be taken.
That evening, from 5:00–8:00 p.m., the museum will remain open for First Free Friday. Representatives from various groups engaged in cleaning up the Patuxent will be available to recruit new volunteers and answer questions about their activities. At 7pm, there will be a showing of “Preacher for the Patuxent,” a documentary featuring Senator Fowlers’ decades long struggle to protect this beautiful resource.
