Celebrating National Hobby Month
Jan 11, 2006, 07:45
The Calvert Marine Museum is celebrating National Hobby Month in January. The first weekend the lobby was turned into a demonstration area for canoe and kayak enthusiasts by the CMM Canoe and Kayak Club.
On Saturday, January 21st, the Museum’s Carving Club will set up shop. Tom Lewis, a well known local carver, will be giving carving demonstrations from 1 pm to 3 pm.
The Solomons Island Model Boat Club will also be on hand both Saturday and Sunday, the 21st and 22nd, to show off their sailing vessels. On Saturday, they will be in the lobby with a variety of hand built models. On Sunday, weather permitting, they will be out in the boat basin holding a model skipjack regatta.
On Saturday, January 28th, Tess Van Orden, a 16-year-old an aspiring paleontologist from Mechanicsville, will be on hand to demonstrate origami. Tess has launched a campaign called “Aspire to Science” and is offering her original origami to anyone who makes a donation to the Camp CMM Summer Scholarship Fund. She will be demonstrating in the lobby from noon to 2:00 pm.
If you are interested in joining one of the museum’s clubs, or in seeing skilled hobbyists at work, visit the museum in January, visit their website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com, or call Sherrod Sturrock at 410-326-2042 x32.
