WINTER LIGHTS CELEBRATION RETURNS TO THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Nov 3, 2006, 08:21

Enjoy the magical beauty of lighthouses during the Calvert Marine Museum’s annual Winter Lights Festival, a celebration of Chesapeake Bay Lighthouses, taking place January 13 and 14, from 10am-5pm at the Calvert Marine Museum.

The Calvert Marine Museum has a variety of activities planned for this special lighthouse celebration.  Tours of the Drum Point and Cove Point Lighthouses will be conducted both days.  Peruse displays in the museum lobby and learn more about lighthouses from “keepers” and associations from across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey.

Special guests of the museum Winter Lights Festival will be Bruce and Cheryl Roberts, founders of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and recipients of the “Keeper of the Light” award for their work in lighthouse preservation on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Mr. Roberts, an award winning photographer, will give a talk both Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm on “The Men Who Built The Lights” the topic he is currently researching for his next book.

At the Cove Point Lighthouse, the museum is honored to offer a very special and unique lighthouse-themed art show by Southern Maryland artist Harry Richardson.  The show will be open to the public on Saturday from 11:00am until 3:00pm, and Sunday from 1:00pm until 4:00pm.  Harry Richardson hopes to preserve through his paintings the fast changing rural landscapes and historic places of his region. A native of Frederick County, Maryland, Harry was born on his grandfather's dairy farm in 1943. For over thirty years he has lived in an old eighteenth century stone house in the woods near historic village of New Market, MD.  Harry and Deborah also have a waterfront home on the wide Patuxent River near Solomons Island. It is here that Harry studies the wildlife of the bay and paints the historic lighthouses, boats, and waterman of the Chesapeake.

On Saturday evening, lighthouse enthusiasts are invited to a special event, Cove Point by Candlelight, offering heavy hors d’oeuvers, a cash bar, live entertainment by maritime musician Bob Zentz, an expanded presentation of lighthouse-themed art by local artist Harry Richardson, a lighthouse film showing in the new Fog Bell Signal mini-theater sponsored by Dominion, and more.  Tickets are $45 each, and space is limited.  For tickets to Cove Point by Candlelight, contact Melissa Carnes, 410-326-2042 ext. 17.

Sunday is Family Lighthouse Day, offering a variety of family-oriented activities including a Gingerbread Lighthouse Workshop for children ages five and up and lighthouse crafts for kids throughout the day.  Sunday’s entertainment schedule will include maritime musician Bob Zentz at 3:00 in the museum auditorium. The concert is free with admission to the museum.
