CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM HOSTS DREW MCMULLEN FOR FINAL JOHN SMITH LECTURE
Oct 17, 2007, 05:16
On November 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Calvert Marine Museum, Drew McMullen will give the final lecture in the John Smith series.
During the summer of 2007, a crew of modern-day explorers, historians, naturalists and educators retraced Captain John Smith's incredible 1608 expedition. Traveling in a 28-foot reproduction of Smith's shallop, and living much as Smith and his men did 400 years ago, the shallop and her crew spent 121-days voyaging to the headwaters of almost every tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. In the process they spoke with the president, the queen, governors, senators, and Native American chiefs as well as thousands of Chesapeake Bay residents. It was an incredible adventure and will be shared through photographs, graphs and the words of crew members. Drew McMullen is the president of the Sultana Project in Chestertown, Maryland. The John Smith lecture series was funded through a grant from the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Gateways Program, which will be honored at this event.
Prior to the lecture, there will be a book signing event. Chesapeake: Exploring the Water Trail of Captain John Smith by John Page Williams serves as both a guide book and a history to help modern boaters explore the water trail. Williams, a naturalist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, served as the naturalist for the water trail. Chesapeake reveals the fascinating story of Smith’s journeys, the impact of the human footprint on the bay’s complex life systems, and the best ways for us to explore and respect this rich natural wonder in our midst. Chesapeake Bay of Light: An Exploration of the Chesapeake Bay’s Wild and Forgotten Places with photography by Ian J. Plant and essays by Tom Horton is a ‘must have’ addition for anyone who appreciates the beauty of this remarkable estuary. John Page Williams, Ian Plant and Tom Horton will be signing their books starting at 6 p.m. in the museum lobby. Books are available for sale in the Museum Store.
This event is free. No reservations are being accepted, and seating is limited. For more information, visit www.calvertmarinemuseum.com or call 410-326-2042 ext. 32.
