The Calvert Marine Museum opens the new year with First Free Friday on January 4. The museum is open free to the public from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and all exhibits are open for your enjoyment. At 7:30 p.m., enjoy the documentary film Around Cape Horn, Captain Irving Johnson’s memorable documentary of his voyage as a young man aboard the sailing bark Peking in 1929, including a remarkable sequence about the ship rounding the Horn in a storm. At 8:00 p.m., maritime musician Bob Zentz returns to the museum for his third consecutive year, and will perform “Season of the Sailor” in the auditorium. This concert of songs, poems, and stories about the winter season for those away from home is appropriate for adults of all ages and children age 10 and up. Admission is by donation. A cash bar will be available beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Enjoy the magical beauty of lights on Saturday, January 5, 2008, as the Calvert Marine Museum presents the popular event Cove Point by Candlelight at the Cove Point Lighthouse from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 pm. Decorated with candles and twinkle lights, this unique event provides the only public opportunity to visit the Cove Point Lighthouse at night, and one of the few opportunities to gather in the interior of the Keeper’s House.
Cove Point by Candlelight will offer heavy hors d’oeuvers, a cash bar, live entertainment by maritime musician Bob Zentz, and a winter wonderland floral art and design show by Dickson’s Fields of Flowers. The event will also feature a showing of the new Cove Point Lighthouse historical documentary in the Fog Bell Signal mini-theater. Tickets are $55 each and space is limited. For tickets to Cove Point by Candlelight, contact Melissa Carnes, 410-326-2042 ext. 17. Space is limited and proceeds from this event will support renovations to the Cove Point Lighthouse and Keeper’s House.
On Saturday, January 12, come to the museum for the first ever Behind –the-Scenes Family Overnight. Families will gather at 6:00 p.m. for a pizza dinner followed by a session of New Games. At 7:00, join a hunt for hidden pictures in the murals, play the museum game, and take a special behind-the-scenes tour. The film “Night at the Museum” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. followed by lights out. Rise and shine for breakfast with the critters. Cost is $35 per person. Pre-registration is required, and space is very limited. To register, call 410-326-2042 x 41.
On Monday, January 21, we invite everyone to a special Behind-the-Scenes at the Museum Day. Most people have no idea what goes into running a museum. Here’s your chance to catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the museum staff, from exhibit design to feeding the critters, from boat maintenance to putting on a program. You can even design your own museum! As a special treat, our store manager Maureen Baughman will present “Museum Store: A Sneak Preview” at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium. This is your chance to explore a whole new career option by learning about why merchandise is chosen for a museum store. General museum admission applies; the museum will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
