Calvert Marine Museum presents Sailor on the Shore: A Guide to Model Yachting

Apr 11, 2008, 06:10

The Calvert Marine Museum is pleased to present Sailor on the Shore:  A Guide to Model Yachting on May 18-20 at the museum campus in Solomons.   The fee for participation is $60, and space is very limited.

Model yachting is an unusual but fascinating and well documented sport. This program provides participants with the unique opportunity to learn about model yachting and then experience it first hand. Participants in this program will learn about the history and construction of model yachts, a hobby practiced the world over. With the help of the museum’s model boat club members, and using radio-controlled boats constructed for educational programming, participants have the opportunity to put their knowledge to work sailing in the museum’s boat basin. The program also includes admission to the museum and a guided tour of the small craft collection.

The program begins on May 18 at 10:00 a.m. with an orientation to Model Schooner races.  From 1:00-3:00 p.m., participants observe Model Schooner races in the boat basin.  On May 19 at 10:00 a.m., a presentation on the history, facts, and lore of model sail boating will be given in the Small Craft Center, followed by a lesson on operating Victoria remote controlled sailboats at 1:30 p.m. and a guided tour of the Patuxent Small Craft Center at 3:00 p.m.  The course culminates on May 20 with races in the boat basin starting at 10:00 a.m.  Lunch is served daily at noon.
