VOLUNTEER COUNCIL RECEIVES GOVERNOR'S AWARD

Jul 6, 2011, 11:03

The Calvert Marine Museum Volunteer Council is the proud recipient of the 2011 Governor's Volunteer Service Award. Presented by the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism, this distinct honor recognizes Marylanders who gave back and made a difference in their communities through volunteer service over the past year. Sixteen awards were presented from nearly two hundred nominations.

"For 28 years, the Governor's Service Awards has recognized outstanding service from individuals and groups," said Governor O'Malley. "I'd like to commend each of this year's recipients for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to Maryland's communities. Together, we can continue to move our State towards that better future that we all prefer."

The Volunteer Council was established in September 1990 to promote the effective use of volunteer services in supporting the museum. Volunteers that are members of the Calvert Marine Museum Society are eligible to join the council. Currently, over 235 registered volunteers help with the day-to-day operations at the museum, from interpreting exhibits to working in the museum store, to assisting with the Summer Waterside Music concerts. "These people are the best of the best and the museum could not run smoothly without them," said Traci Cimini, Development Associate. Last year, the volunteers donated 25,487 hours equating to $544,402 worth of in-kind services.

Calvert Marine Museum volunteers are coordinated by Sherry Reid, the Volunteer and Events Coordinator. She began as a volunteer at the museum more than 25 years ago when the first summer concert was held under the Drum Point Lighthouse. The museum attracts many people from all walks of life that give of their skills and knowledge year after year. Their dedication is true testimony of what it means to make a difference in the community. If you'd like to join the Calvert Marine Museum family by becoming a volunteer, contact Sherry Reid at 410-326-2042, ext. 19.
