HEARTSTRING QUARTET APPEARING LIVE
Saturday, March 10 in the Calvert Marine Museum Auditorium

The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland in partnership with the Calvert Marine Museum presents the HeartString Quartet, on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased at www.cssm.org.

Heartstring is a multi-faceted, unique quartet from the UK boasting some of the most important names in Irish music - legendary guitarist Arty McGlynn, virtuoso fiddler Nollaig Casey and brilliant harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh join forces with Britain's finest flat-picking guitarist Chris Newman. The concert crosses boundaries in a tour-de-force of world-class guitar-playing, sensuous singing, fiddle-playing of heart-melting lyricism and harping of power and passion. The Glasgow Herald said of their performance in the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh: "A marvelous combination: tremendous breadth and depth…entertaining introductions…consummate playing, brilliantly articulate…breathtaking."

Afternoon master workshops are available for $40 (some scholarships available) in guitar, Irish harp and fiddle from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Calvert Marine Museum. All workshops will focus on intermediate to advanced skill levels, but beginners are welcome to join in for the valuable experience from these professional musicians.

The two sisters, Ní Chathasaigh and Casey, come together to represent Ireland's most influential harper and featured fiddle player, who toured throughout the world with the international hit show Riverdance. Nollaig has been a featured soloist in over 20 feature films, including Dancing at Lughnasa and Waking Ned. She’s also worked and recorded with Enya, Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor, Nanci Griffith, Ricky Skaggs, Rod Stewart, Emmy Lou Harris, Steve Earle, Mary Black, Carlos Nuñez, Jim Rooney, Andy Irvine, Moving Hearts, The Indigo Girls, Spandau Ballet, Elvis Costello, Christy Moore, Liam O'Flynn, Dan ar Braz and Sharon Shannon, among many others.

An ex-member of Boys of the Lough, Newman has produced many successful albums for other artists and has been principal guitar tutor for Newcastle University's Folk B.Mus. course since its inception in 2001. McGlynn has become one of the most sought after musicians in Ireland, playing and recording with Christy Moore, Paul Brady, John Prine, Tim O'Brien, Jim Rooney, Jerry Douglas, Donal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn, The Chieftains and countless others. He also played as a member of Planxty, Kevin Burke’s Patrick Street, De Danann and was for a number of years lead guitarist with the Van Morrison Band.

This event is sponsored in part by The Hilton Garden Inn, Solomons; The Ruddy Duck, Solomons; and SOMD.com. Visit sponsor websites for special pricing related to this event. For more details, visit www.cssm.org, email info@cssm.org, or call (301) 375-0534.
