AUGUST EVENTS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Back to school is around the corner! Visitors of all ages will enjoy activities and events at the Calvert Marine Museum all month long. For a complete listing of programs, please visit www.calvertmarinemuseum.com.

Thursday, August 2 - Oyster Wars Talk
Gregory Bartles, Lieutenant Commander and DNR historian will give a talk on the Oyster Wars and Cannon currently on display in the lobby through September at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. FREE.

Friday, August 3 - First Free Friday
The museum is open and free to the public from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Navy Cruisers will perform on the outdoor stage starting at 7:00 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and a picnic supper. Docents will be in every gallery talking about the exhibits. Visit Drum Point Lighthouse and enjoy 30-minute boat rides on the Wm. B. Tennison sponsored by M&T Bank. FREE.

Tuesday, August 7, 9 & 23 - Sea Squirts
Marsh Animals - Who Are We? FREE drop-in program from 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for toddlers 18 months to 3 years old and their caregivers.

Sunday, August 5 - National Lighthouse Day
Celebrate National Lighthouse Day at the Calvert Marine Museum as both the Drum Point Lighthouse and Cove Point Lighthouse will be open for tours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cove Point is free; museum admission is required to see the Drum Point Lighthouse. The Museum Store will highlight special lighthouse merchandise, and there will be a lighthouse juried art show in the lobby.
 
Saturday, August 11 - Waterman for a Day at the Lore Oyster House
Experience life and work in an oyster packing house, use oyster tongs, work in the shucking room and sing work songs from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Learn about oyster biology and how to help restore Crassostrea virginica from the Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society. FREE

Excursions with Captain Rachel aboard Roughwater, a Chesapeake workboat, showing the skills and tools used by working watermen will leave the oyster house at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. - $15 per person. Limited to six passengers per outing; call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 for reservations.

Thursday, August 16 - BOSTON Concert
The rock classic band BOSTON will appear live on the PNC Waterside Pavilion stage with special guest The Sam Grow Band. Tickets are $40 and $50 (additional fees apply) and available at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com, by calling 1-800-787-9454, or by visiting Prince Frederick Ford/Dodge. Gates open at 6:00 and show time is 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a night a music, food and drink and fun. 

Saturday, August 18 - Fossil Field Experience
Do you know why Calvert County is known for its shark's teeth? Did you know that they can be 20 million years old? Join a museum educator and discover the clues found buried in the sand, telling tales of life long before humans walked the earth from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Space is limited. Preregistration required. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Saturday, August 18 - Picnic Cruise
Reserve your spot aboard the historic Wm. B. Tennison from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. for the annual Picnic Cruise. Bring along a picnic basket and enjoy the sights and sounds while cruising on the Patuxent River. Preregistration required; call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Friday, August 24 - Maritime Performance Series
Mac Walter and John Cronin return to the Maritime Performance Series at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. These cousins bring a combined acoustic finger style virtuosity that is amazing! The synergy and beautiful harmonies always leave the audience on their feet and wanting more! Admission is $5 at the door. Lotus Kitchen will offer Lite Bites for sale starting at 6:00; wine, beer, and water also available for sale.

Thursday, August 30 - Little Minnows
C Is for Crabs! Children ages 3 - 5 years are invited to participate from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. $4 members; $5 non-members. Space is limited. Pre-registration suggested. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Museum members and children under 5 are always admitted free.
