CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM HOSTS HISTORIC BUYBOAT GATHERING

Jul 19, 2012, 08:40

CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM HOSTS UNIQUE GATHERING
OF HISTORIC BUYBOATS

The Calvert Marine Museum is hosting a rare gathering of the only three surviving log-built Chesapeake Bay buyboats (or deckboats as they are more commonly known in Virginia) on Monday, August 6 in the boat basin from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The boats will be open to the public.

Joining the museum's 1899-built passenger boat, Wm. B. Tennison, is the Old Point, built in Poquoson, Virginia of nine logs in 1909, and owned by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland, and the nine-log F.D. Crockett, built in 1924 in Dare, Virginia, and currently operated by the Deltaville Maritime Museum in Deltaville, Virginia.

These three survivors are unique to the Chesapeake Bay and represent the ultimate step in the evolution of multi-log boats that trace their ancestry back to the native-American dugout canoe. They will be joined by other buyboats, members of the Chesapeake Bay Buyboat Association (CBBA), as they stop over in Solomons during their annual reunion and cruise.

For more information please contact Richard Dodds, Curator of Maritime History at 410-326-2042, ext. 31 or email doddsrj@co.cal.md.us.
