WHAT FLOATS YOUR BOAT PROGRAM AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

May 23, 2008, 09:10

Still trying to figure out what to do with your kids this summer? Consider this unusual summer camp offered by the Calvert Marine Museum. “What Floats Your Boat?” revolves around building a cardboard boat and then competing in the first annual CMM Cardboard Boat Race.

Throughout the week, campers will work in teams to design and construct a cardboard boat using only cardboard and various sealers. The winner must not only stay afloat, but also reach the end of the course (strategically placed in shallow water). Participants will also learn about why boats float, how they are powered, and different methods of steering them. They will experience different kinds of boats, and have a chance to sail radio controlled model boats.

The camp takes place at the museum from July 14 – 18 with the final race taking place on Saturday morning, July 19. It is for rising 5th and 6th graders. The cost is $70 for museum members, and $80 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. For information, or to register for this unique opportunity, call 410-326-2042 ext. 41. Space is limited.
