JANUARY EVENTS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Beat those after-holiday blues and visit the Calvert Marine Museum with activities and programs for visitors of all ages. The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and will be closed on Friday, January 1, 2010.
Thursday, January 7
Little Minnows: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Ancient Patterns: Patterns are everywhere, even in million year old fossils. Sort fossils into categories, identify repeated patterns, and draw favorites using scratch art. Space is limited. Pre-registration suggested. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Brownie Try-It: Animals
Earn the Animals Try-It from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required; call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Girl Scout Cadette Program: Museum Discovery

Sea Squirts: 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Squeak, Grunt, and Growl: Who am I? If you heard a grunting noise at the museum, would you know it was an otter? Using known animal sounds and new ones, explore the animal world through sound. Appropriate stories, songs, and movements will make it even more fun for ages 18 months – 3 years old.

Archaeological Perspectives into Sea Level Rise within the Chesapeake Bay
Free lecture presented by Darrin Lowery in the museum auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Series funded by the Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, and the Boeing Company.

Young Salts: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Whose Tracks Are These? Animal tracks are like calling cards, they tell us who came to call when we weren’t looking. What kinds of animals stop at our salt marsh for a midnight snack? Visit the marsh to “read the clues” and then make some animal tracks of your own. Pre-registration required; call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Chesapeake Lights: Enjoy displays and talk with representatives from lighthouses both around the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast. Special lighthouse gifts will be available both in the Store and from lighthouse representatives. A talk on Lightships: Floating Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic, presented by Wayne Kirklin, Associate Historian, Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation in Lewes, Delaware, will be in the museum auditorium at 2:00 p.m. Free.
Monday, January 18
Boomerang Workshop: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Visitors of all ages can make their own boomerang and learn the aerodynamics that make the down-under missiles fly. Materials fee $2.00. No registration required.
Wednesday, January 20
Little Minnows: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Boat Building - A Winter Project. Build and decorate your own toy sailboat for the warmer days to come. Space is limited; pre-registration is suggested. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Tribute Concert for Tom Wisner: Follow on the Water
Featuring local musicians Frank Schwartz, Teresa Whitaker, John Cronin, and Mac Walter, this concert will signal the release of a double CD, Follow on the Water chronicling Tom’s years working and collecting in and around Solomons Island. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and are available on-line at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com or at the door. Limited seating; advance tickets are recommended.

The Calvert Marine Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; closed on January 1, 2010. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and those with a valid military I.D., and $2.00 for children ages 5 – 12; children under 5 are free.
